Cedar Dunes and West Point Lighthouse - July 2018
The "West End" as Islanders from the East End call it. Even though Prince Edward Island is only 120 miles (193 kilometers) across, Scott only remembers ever going to the West End a few times in his life. Ancestors from both his Mom and Dads side originally settled in the West however his parents and Scott grew up in the East. We camped at Cedar Dunes and Jacques Cartier Provincial Parks and explored for 10 days.
Cedar Dunes Provincial Campground is right beside West Point Lighthouse with is distinctive stripes. The water here is colder and there are strong undercurrents most of the time.
We did see lifeguard training taking place.
View from West Point Lighthouse. The campground is within walking distance at the end of the parking lot.
Boardwalks have lost the battle against the dunes. There are only a few walkable ones left.
The fox had babies in the dunes and was watching Tanner very closely.
Bookings are available to stay in the lighthouse and attached motel.
My favorite memory is meeting a French guy in the parking lot. He was sitting in his conversion van which had French plates and a map of the Americas on the side so I had to go talk to him. Turns out he (in his 60's I'd say) and his wife had been living in the van for 6 years and had traveled from tip of South America up to PEI. This was the last leg before leaving by boat with their van back to France from Halifax mid-September. That's an impressive trip.
We became addicted to collecting seaglass. Tanner didn't object to all the walks.
Beaches and beautiful coast everywhere. This was Campbellton Cove.
We stopped at as many outlooks and scenic stops as possible. Great view here.
This Pioneer Cemetery we came across was in the most beautiful location and we were amazed to see some who made it to a ripe old age. John McPhersons parent died in 1855 and 1867 making it to 94 and 100 years of age respectively.
Campground Specific Information: Although the map shows quite a few sites on the water due to dunes and trees it is difficult to see the water from most of the sites. This doesn't make them bad sites, I just wouldn't want you to be disappointed. If you can get them the sites from which you can see the water are 21 - 41. Hookups are between every 2 sites .. so between 21& 22 and between 23 & 24. Keep the location of your hookups and view from your rig in mind when booking. There were quite a few seasonal campers here so these sites may be tough to get.
The first site you see on the right is # 21..numbers going up to the left.
