Thanksgiving Mini Break and a New Stair Hole (Oct 10 - 20, 2019)

Timing could not have been better. The house is closed in just in time for my sister Karen and her husband, also a Scott, to visit for the Thanksgiving Weekend.  Thursday was cleanup day, getting their "bedroom" ready. The first night was a cold one however once we got extra blankets, closed off the stair hole with plywood and a better heater set up it was pretty comfortable. Karen loved the commode it'd found a few weeks before.

Scott M. (McPhee as opposed to Scott HD, Hunter-Duvar to differentiate the two) was looking forward to as much seafood as possible and Friday was a gorgeous day so we headed over to Clamdiggers in Cardigan. This time of year can be a bit difficult as many of the restaurants close early-mid September. Luckily Clamdiggers is open. It was surprisingly busy (in a good way.. not overly) for mid-afternoon but we scored a window seat overlooking the river. No work to get back to, no schedule to worry about, it was the most leisurely meal and afternoon I remember having in a long time. The food was exceptional.
Thanks Karen and Scott M. for treating as it happened to be my birthday.

It rained most of Friday night and Saturday. I only mention Friday night since the winds were very strong and we did see some water coming through somewhere on the East side of the house. Scott HD made some improvements after Karen and Scott left but there is still some coming in when the wind it strong on that side. The investigation continues.

Back to the weekend, we headed to the Charottetown Farmers Market and the newly re-imagined Founders Hall near the wharf. Founders Hall now has a variety of vendors, some food, some artisan.  There was one where they made ice cream in front of you to order.
Pretty cool and very tasty.  Here's how it's made.

Fresh cream, cacao, raspberries onto a very cold surface

Crushed and mixed together as it all cools

The mixture starts to freeze

Scraped into rolls
Eh Voila!! Awesome ice cream

Back on the seafood quest Scott had a pile of Oysters. Not my thing, but he enjoyed them

Pam, Trevor, Emily and Veda came over for a delicious Thanksgiving roast Scott M. cooked on the BBQ rotisserie. After dinner, the boys chatted and the girls completed a puzzle. Especially loved all ages enjoying the puzzle. Great fun.

Karen wanted to hit a beach - we headed to Panting Shores Beach hoping to see some seals.  As luck would have it the tide was going out and we spent over an hour watching more and more seals arrive to claim a spot on a particularly shallow section. They can warm their bodies up without actually going on shore.  Watch the rocks - they are slippery. Nearly hurt myself badly.

Happy to be on the beach again

The seals kept coming, making snorting sounds, arguing over their spots, trying to keep others away. We counted 20 altogether.

Cape Bear Lighthouse - A Marconi Wireless Telegraph Station was built adjacent to the lighthouse in 1905. On the night of April 14, 1912, the operator, Bartlett received the first distress in Canada from the Titanic. A similar station in Newfoundland was in contact with the Titanic but Newfoundland was not part of Canada at the time.

Row, Row, Row your boat... backwards!!

Now we're getting somewhere
Karen and Scott left very early Tuesday morning (we left at 3 am to get them to Charlottetown for a 5 am flight). We went back to bed when we got home and then
it was back to work after a fantastic break.

I've been doing supply runs, winter tires, planning and managed to get all the nails out of the flooring we are reclaiming and having planed.

As I write this, the sun is out and the view is gorgeous. We have a trailer full - a couch we will recover and a bunch of maple tabletops we'll use for kitchen counter tops. Trying to save and re-purpose where we can. Off to Scott's moms this afternoon to put away the summer things.
