Rebuilding Has Officially Begun - Junkyard Treasure (Aug 26 - Sep 1, 2019)

What a great week - Feeling fantastic

The rest of the sub-floor came out Monday leaving a cavernous combined main floor and basement. Thought briefly about turning the basement into an indoor pool, just living on the upper floor.. LOL!!

Nailing pulling (my responsibility while Scott works on the heavier stuff) also began with hundreds of nails left in the wood after removing the lath and strapping from every surface during the tear-down.

Removing the last of the flooring

My view from nail pulling upstairs

I did not enjoy going up and down this ladder - kept it to a minimum

Many of these beam were very rotten  - they all smelled after 123 years in a damp space

6 x  6 's coming in to replace the sill

Not a fan of heights - scary ladder for me
Turnaround point

Nothing left except the outside walls.
The weather network was reporting the tail end of a tropical storm would be hitting the island which was a bit nerve wrecking with the house perched on the foundation like this. Luckily, there was only some rain and not too much wind.

Original joists were dovetailed

Pondering his next move in replacing the sill

One of us doesn't mind the heights

House jacking

We have a bottle jack but the one brother-in-law Trevor lent us was a real workhorse.

Could've made a great pool

On Thursday Mackay's arrived with our septic tank. They had it in and the bed laid by mid-day Friday. Scott will do the plumbing as he has time and we'll have a toilet in addition to the motorhome.
Good timing as the park we've been dumping at each week is closing in 3 weeks.

A welcome delivery

Didn't take them long to dig the hole

It's always fun watching machinery and other people working.

Positioning the center beam

The first joists going in - what a great feeling

End of day - Thursday

Above - the new septic bed was laid

Below - the old septic "tank" (concrete blocks with wood beam topper) was filled in. It hadn't been used for a few years but as with the rest the beams were rotten and leaving it unfilled was an accident waiting to happen. Either a person or machine would have eventually fallen in.

Using my deck building skills attaching the joist hangers.
We used pressure treated in the basement since it's still going to be a relatively damp place

BEFORE PICTURE (MONDAY)
AFTER PICTURE (SATURDAY)

Saturday morning we took our last really big load to the dump and look what we found.
A gorgeous old chair, sturdy and comfortable, just needs a little refinishing.
I love it!!

Another of my favorite things is diminishing supply piles, There are still a lot of supplies to be delivered but I really enjoy seeing each one going down and being used up. A sure sign of progress.

Blocking started
New, less scary ladder upstairs

On such a roll we worked Saturday and will take Monday off.
Last job was to spray the whole inside of the house with Javex. The house has been airing out and most of the rotten wood is gone but the Javex will help with any left over rodent crap smells in the walls as well as just give it an extra bit of a cleanout.

Next week -  finish the floor, lift part of the roof at the top of the new stairs among other jobs.

Happy Labour Day Weekend Everyone
