Mud Season, Beaches and Mask Alert (Jan 25 - Mar 12, 2021)

It's been a rollercoaster winter, mostly weather wise. We've had a few snowy days, interspersed with days so warm, mud season started in January. I'd prefer things stay frozen until they don't but nobody asked so we've (mostly me since Scott rarely gets to leave the house :-) ) have been parking at the bottom of the driveway off an on since January.

Had a little fun at work, painting the cabinet fronts different colours. They needed painting and colours rather then black brightened things up a bit, particularly as it's the paint department. I gave my notice a few weeks ago and my last day of work will be April 3rd.  I've enjoyed being the "paint lady" but am ready to get back to working on projects at home.

One or both of us may work again but for now we won't except on the porches, garden, shed, RV, etc..

Test Fitting
Scott started trimming the windows and doors February 2nd. There was a lot of measuring, cutting, priming and painting but a month later all the windows were trimmed, all rooms have doors and they are all trimmed. Woohoo!! Guests are welcome any time.

Kitchen sink window, box frame built and test fitted before painting

Shellac on the knots to stop bleed through

Two front windows are 100" wide x 48" high

Guest room / Prep area for upstairs windows

Kitchen was construction site again

Door from mudroom into main area is a pocket door with windows.
Keeps cold out but light still comes through.
Door on the right opens into the hall and leads to the basement trapdoor.
Both before they were trimmed.

It's been difficult to get a good picture of the trim with shadows and brightness from outside.
I love it especially with the wide sills due to the thick walls.

I've been busy working and sometimes, if I've lucky enough to be home on a sunny afternoon,
I'm happy to take a nap.

We've gotten out to the beach a couple of times. Usually windy and cool but always beautiful.

Guernsey Cove - good for seaglass especially after a storm.

We got absorbed in looking for seaglass and needed to hurry to beat the tide on the way back.
Found some really nice pieces.

Headed home early from work one day due to stormy weather. Wasn't too bad until the whiteout conditions on our road. Was glad to be home.

Hugh Hefner's cousin, Scott, making pancakes.. LOL!!

The morning after the snowstorm it was beautiful but I got the car stuck on the driveway and in this week we had to have the driveway blown out so I could drive to work and done again before I got home so I could get home. Clear days but the snow would just get blown onto the driveway. Eventually, I realized I should just park at the bottom of the driveway again.

No snow had blown in at the top but once around the corner it was a different story.

Probably shouldn't have tried to get through this.

Should we sell the motorhome or update it and keep it for now, that is the question.
We've been thinking about a smaller one but we sure like this one so we are
currently planning to update this one. Took a little visit out to the driveway to remind ourselves how much we like it.

Little exercise snowshoeing around the backyard.

and another trip to the beach - Panting Shores this time

Love the sun glistening off the water and snow, shapes and movement.

A few ships still pass in the winter

Same ship passing our place a bit later

Sunset on the Icy Snow

We are well taken care of by Mackays with snow removal but I'm not sure they're going to want to keep helping us. In the space of a week the plow truck went off  the edge of the driveway (he got it out without a tow), the snowblower went off the driveway (no picture, we only saw the tracks in the neighbours field which is how he got out that time) and then the snowblower went down a second time (this time he got a tractor to get him out. Ouch!!

Resident seal relaxing in the sun on the ice on the Montague waterfront

Early delivery of wood for the front and back porches. We don't want to have to worry about trucks coming up the driveway in the spring if we can help it.

Scott made a table top for the kitchen but he may use it for his workshop and start again
because it's a bit warped.

Veda had surgery to remove recurring cancer on her nose. The doctor couldn't get it all so she'll be starting on medication once it heals up. She has also had several episodes of a racing heartbeat as well as a skipping heartbeat in the past month. These things aside she still enjoys a day out. A couple of weeks ago we took a drive to "town" (Charlottetown) to see the ice sculptures. There weren't many but it was a fun outing.

These covered outdoor pods include a table/chairs for dining.
People looked warm. Great idea in Covid times.

Veda helped us find where the Hunter-Duvars lived in Charlottetown after they sold their original property on Mill River. The house is gone but there is a Duvar Crescent marks the spot. Scott remembers going there as a kid.

Dropping Veda back off at home we were surprised this fox was following us down the driveway towards her place. Not as surprised when we realized the neighbour has been feeding it. Great for pictures not such a good idea for the fox or Veda - he pretty much came right up to us.

Wish I'd had my good camera and not just the phone with me.

Beautiful sunrises almost daily this winter

Gorgeous purples/pinks over the strait during the same sunrise

Getting ready to trek up the driveway after work one day. All bundled up including 2 masks for warmth, had to stop to take off my glasses in order to see. Sooooo cold by the time I got into the house I asked Scott to untie my boots, my hands were too frozen.

View down towards the car once I got back inside.

Ever shifting ice on the strait.

Sunset one muddy night before my walk to the house this past week

Even the birds are sinking in

This is before it got really bad

Scott almost got the tractor stuck yesterday trying smooth out the mud so it would freeze with fewer ruts. He forgot to get a picture but the front tires were almost covered in mud. It all froze overnight and will likely stay that way for a few days before mudding again.
We'll get some gravel trucked in to help soon.

Current project for Scott is to get the screen room windows rebuilt and put plastic on them so we can use the room more in the next 2-3 months. The original screen only windows have blown out (all but one) because the frames were too big and the wind too high.  We'll redo the screens too.

Three weeks of work left for me. Then it's on furniture finishing, curtain making and decorating.

If you remember the title of this blog, you are probably wondering about the mask alert. I thought I should share since I was more than a bit shocked yesterday. Went to the washroom at work and had my mask hanging from one ear. I'm washing my hands and look up at the mirror. What do I see but probably 8-10 dark hairs sprouting out of my face in various locations. It occurred to me that wearing a mask and breathing hot air into it 8-9 hours a day as I do at work has turned my face into a fertile garden, causing all sorts of things to grow where they didn't as much before. Take a careful look at your face - might be the same for you. I won't miss wearing a mask all day - that's for sure. Heading for a mirror and the tweezers now.

Lots of love to you all. Hope you enjoyed the update.
